Update: Books and Things

Update: Mid February to Very Late June 2016

I have made some progress since my last update. I was trying to catch up to my Goodreads "books read" list. Getting my Read in the Past page matched up to my GR list. I was also trying to keep that page looking OK. I haven't finished matching the lists up so that is part of the satisfaction factor. Actually the lack of satisfaction. After that it will need a few more tweaks before I am fully satisfied with it. Um OK so I stalled on this project.

In the background I was working on a few review kind of posts.

A "recent read" that is actually somewhat recent and I have a review of. A quick review posted on Goodreads shortly after I updated my profile there to reflect finishing that particular book. I probably should post it on this blog as well, but right now I am a bit lazy.

To Heaven and Back by Mary C. Neal:  May 2012 Waterbrook Press 222 pages ***

I don't remember what my main goal was when I first attempted to make this post back in mid-Feb. I let it sit till around April for a while and then tried to work on it in early May but we know hoe that didn't go.

Wow it has been a while since I've updated this post as well. Since that book that was semi-reviewed I have read five other books, but haven't "reviewed" them. I have a ton of books read in the last 3 or 4 years that I sort of want to review but haven't. I don't know if I ever will. OH well.

Editorial Note:
Good I had this post in the drafting queue. I thought I was going to have to do a quick "State of the Blog" update post. I probably should do one since the year is half over already and I am nowhere near looking like my self appointed post quota will be met for the year for two years in a row now.

Gotta Call Herc! Gotta Call Herc!

In the dining receipt name game I recently got another good one, or at least a new one. If you actually read this post's title then you have the name, but not the spelling I got.

Newton and Toot from "The Mighty Hercules" cartoon (1963-66)

OH let me count the ways my name Kirk has been misheard and spelled, of course there is Curt/Kurt, Kurk, Kirt, then there is Kart, Cark, Cork, Turk, Curck (a fave from a few months back). I've even been called by my brother's name Erik once or twice from people with faulty memories or switched brain wires or just in the know of cool Scandinavian names. Erik (haven't heard Rick) does sound kind of like Kirk and oddly I do have a brother Erik. It is weird when someone who doesn't know him or even know I have a brother calls me Erik. They probably think the other spelling Eric.

I've occasionally been called Keith, Karl, Ken, Kent, or Clark (Klark). Haven't seen those in print though. A classic from years ago from a mailing list by a bank "Kirl"? WT? All I can think is they cut and pasted my name/address from another list dropped the second "k" and moved over my middle initial "L".

Getting these alternate names printed on a receipt or as the address on an envelope is another thing. Sometimes I think about keeping the things, but I think I have already recycled or tossed most of them anyway so the collection would not be complete. It has only been the most recent ones that I have even bothered making a blog post about. I'm not even sure why I've done that.

This new one was the first time I recall getting this misspelling. I think I had heard it before, there are very few that I have not "heard". It is another instant Classic...HERK! My Gawd I"m Hercules! Wow I think I'm honored to get Hercules' nickname. Hehe.

Previous Misspellings:
Cark
Cork
Curck
Curk
Kart
Kurk *Yes I've seen both spellings.
Turk

Note: I will hide the master Fortunes List page soon for a while. I have a huge backlog of fortunes to post and don't want to spoil things as I add unposted fortunes to the list. This will help me catch up with both the master list and hopefully make a nice consistent run of fortune posts.

DVD Update: Wizards & Warriors

Wizards & Warriors (1983)

WARNING: This is an ANCIENT Post! Only slightly updated.

This post has been sitting around for a few many many months almost years since the September 2014 release. I just was never motivated to continue with it, plus once again scanning photos or surfing the web for an appropriate image caused me to dilly dally and procrastinate. While trying to clear out my dusty drafts folder I decided it would be better to go ahead and post an out of date old post, and add some images, rather than delete it wasting any effort I put into it.

The long awaited television series Wizards and Warriors (1983) has finally come to DVD 30 years after it originally aired sort of. Unfortunately the series was very short lived having only 8 episodes total. I'm not even sure if all of them were aired. Again an unfortunate event is it is only available as an "On Demand" Title. Meaning it is made to order ONLY when ordered online and burned onto a DVD-R not a regular mass printing.

Marco (Walter Olkewicz) and Prince Erik Greystone (Jeff Conaway)

The series was a sword and sorcery fantasy series that starred Jeff Conaway, Clive Revill, Duncan Regehr, Ian Wolfe, Walter Olkewicz, Julia Duffy and Randi Brooks with an appearance (well two) by Christine De Lisle. It was very tongue planted securely in cheek slapstick campy humor. Sort of a Dungeons and Dragons version of the 1970s When Things Were Rotten. Which was a short lived Robin Hood series produced by Mel Brooks.

When I first heard this was coming to DVD I was super excited since I loved the show and hadn't seen it since the original airings. Sure some people have been selling pirated copies on all formats (even some VHS copies) on Ebay for years. However, they were typical pirate low-quality copies not even worth watching. Most copied from an ancient VHS copy.

The Wizard Vector (Clive Revill) and The Witch Bethal (Randi Brooks)

I'm not sure if I am going to take the plunge on this one. I'm not too thrilled about the ON Demand concept. There are some other titles of shows/movies that are in this same ON DEMAND DVD-R boat. I can't think of those titles at this moment and I don't want to do any more research for this ancient post. I would love to get this, but I'm just not sure.

The best photos of the show seem to be at a fan website called wizardsandwarriors.org of course. It is an old site and probably hasn't been updated. That is the site I got the screen shots from. It seems to be the only site people have gotten stuff from, they have the most variety of images, i.e. more than just what a quick Google image search gives you. The DVD cover shot is at several sites, most of them I think are from people who got the DVD and reviewed it on some online forum.
