Word Verification Fun 001

image via majorityoftwo.blogspot.com
Many of you that follow blogs will know that some of them allow for readers comments to be made, but before the comments are published the bloggers/owners need to prove the comments are coming from legitimate readers instead of some spambot. They (the big mighty internet Powers That Be) have a "word verification" thing where you type in the exact characters you see. Some years back I made a couple of posts of some occasional words I was asked to enter to verify I was not a robot. I had also mentioned that a blogger (Spankee) at another blog (My Cardboard Mistress) occasionally would post the weird words he was requested to enter in. Google at one time had a specific name for this verification process but I forget what it was.  Ah I found it via Google Search (Convenient ain't it?) recaptcha, oh wait that was the early version of it when the words were in a grid, now the words are just in strange fonts and bunched together. Maybe they still call it that. I don't know and don't really care THAT much.

Now-a-days Google/Yahoo/Blogger has you type the fictional word AND some numbers from a picture of numbers which sometimes is next to impossible to make out the numbers. Anyway one of my more recent words/numbers were:

41222 glopolu

(or was that a "V" at the end? Hmmm I think it was a "U" not 100% sure now)

The word "glopolu" is the base mixture of ingredients that make up the Hawaiian "delicacy" poi.

It is the glop that is the main paste.

When I was a kid of about 7 I went to Hawaii with my Mom, one of my Brothers and my Mom's Godmother. We went on some kind of family two week package. I didn't like poi then, haven't had it since but I don't think I'd like it. I hear it is an acquired taste..

I like this Poi better:

A Spam of all Spams

OK so we have all gotten Spam email, or at least have heard about it. You know there are the "Chain-Letter" spams that are now on email, there's the Get Rich Quick scams, and the "Bank Of Anerica" (notice there is usually a misspelling such as I did here) Well in my Yahoo email, oddly enough on my birthday (I just now noticed that, weird or coincidence?) I got the Mother of all Spam-Scam-Emails. This is supposedly from of all places THE FBI Um yeah, like the FBI would send an anonymous email instead of sending an official letter via the USPS or a Hand Delivered subpoena or some other real official notice.

I originally didn't even bother reading what the thing was saying, I just read it while posting this message about it. I only saved it for the purpose of posting here just to say Neah neah neah neah, neah. The text was all in bold font. A couple of the big RED Flags that indicate it's a scam: All the misspellings, the email address. If it had really been from the FBI it would have had an email address of fbi.gov and it would probably have had some sort of extra stuff in the header or footer that had some sort of "this is official government correspondence" and mentions of official use and abuse of government documents yadda yadda yadda.

So here is the email I got directly cut & pasted:

Huh?
What the heck did that say anyway. It was all just nonsense to me. It sounds like a variation on the Nigerian Scam but it doesn't seem to give any instructions on what they want you to do or to reply, if you are stupid, or gullible enough to reply to them.

Oh it apparently is The 419 Scam a form of the Nigerian Scam. I forwarded it just now to the abuse email at live.com (report_spam@live.com) and I will mark it as spam in my Yahoo Mailbox.

Here is a link to a Hoax Alert from about.com about a similar email http://crime.about.com/od/scams/qt/fbihoax.htm

Who the Frack are these scammers and how stupid do they think people are? OK so they are not relying on people being stupid, they are relying on people being naive about financial matters and hoping that people will just see the You can get $1 Million in the notice or however much they say you supposedly Won, inherited etc..

Screwy Spam Time

OK, so many of you out there may have noticed a time or two when a spam email is dated about a week ago, or maybe even dated as far as a month from know for some reason. Well this week, actually today (15 Dec 2006) and yesterday (14 Dec 2006) I've seen some spam emails in my Yahoo email dated for Nov 09, 1905 and also on the other end of the spectrum Jan 01, 2038. HUH? How the heck are the spammers doing stuff like that? Sending something pre-dated for thirty years from now or something super post-dated from One Hundred And One Years ago BEFORE COMPUTERS WERE EVEN INVENTED!!!! I never would have noticed except for the fact that every once in a while I check my spam email/trash box instead of my usual automatic deleting without seeing what the heck they are. Also one of the "1905" emails was send to my regular email so in order to even see where the silly spam email was I had to mark my "unread messages only" button to find the stupid thing. UGH!
