Mondegreen Fun: In The GoldenTwilight Zone Earring

Time for another round of "Mondegreen Fun" AKA "Misheard Lyrics". This one is from a song that was released in 1982 by the band Golden Earring, they are most notably known for their song "Radar Love". The song I had misheard the lyrics from is "Twilight Zone" from their album "Cut".

The real lyrics are:
"Soon, you will come to know
When the bullet hits the bone."

However, for many many years I heard the last line as "When the bullet hits the phone." Occasionally I would think that it was "Foam".

Name Game: Kirok In A Hard Place

OK so this latest "is this the last one?" misspelling of my name isn't "Kirok" from The Star Trek Original Series (TOS) episode "The Paradise Syndrome", but it is sort of close.

This time the Chick-Fil-A cashier, where most of these fun misspellings happen, forget that stuffy room in Philadelphia with that Mr. Hamilton guy, was as I said similar. Except it was with a "c" CERCK.

I AM CE-RCK HEAR ME ROAR!

I wonder what the next one will be? I don't think I have actually seen the KI-ROK one, maybe one day.

Ebay And A Name Misspelling Repeat Of Sorts

Hello and welcome to a typical "I don't know what I'm going to post about" post.

So on Ebay I did a minor little goof on ordering something. I ordered a DVD I wanted from a seller that is in Canada. I usually try to just order from USA but will order from Canada from time to time. It is not that I am Anti buying from Canada, I just prefer to order from the US because tracking is more accurate and if there is a problem with the item and I have to return it I don't have to go through the whole shipping to another country thing. Anyway I ordered a DVD and I could have sworn it was from a US seller, but now that I think about it, it was more a case of I wanted the item so bad I didn't really care where it came from. Also I had the item on my watch list for quite sometime, so I probably just assumed it was located in the US. OH Well no biggy.

Not a goof but another Ebay oddity for me was I ordered some vinyl 45s singles. One seller I bought 4 singles from and another seller I had purchased only one. In an odd bit of irony the lot of 4 singles was shipped in a polybag bubble mailer protected by cardboard, and the lonely single was shipped in a 9" x 9" x 6" box. Packed with bubble on top and the single at the bottom of the box. I had expected things to be the other way round.

Quick misspelling Name Game. A year or two ago I once got a receipt with the name "Cork" well now I can add a variant spelling with a "K" twice. Now there are two recent trips to Chick-Fil-A where my name was misspelled as "Kork". I was bad  for a while in February and early March by going there about once a week for 3 or 4 weeks on Friday evenings or on Saturdays around lunchtime.

Name Game: Kent Clark Kent

It happened again. I think this name variant has happened before, but I'm not sure. I thought I had enunciated my name properly, then again I was wearing one of those COVID KN-95 masks and had my glasses on. So I was sort of incognito.

Christopher Reeve as Clark Kent in "Superman"

Yep this time the cashier thought I had said my name was CLARK. I had to listen for this vastly different name to be called to pickup my order. Usually with the other names they are similar enough to mine that I can sort of tune out the difference in pronunciation. I could sort of do that with this too, but I always have to check to see what the ticket spells out and listen for that name. It is tempting sometime to give a wildly fictitious name. The problem though it can't be too crazy because then the person who has to call out the names wouldn't be able to pronounce it correctly. I would also have to remember whatever name I gave. I have toyed with giving "Captain Kirk" as my name, which isn't too far off from the truth. I would just have to worry about getting caught impersonating an officer or accused of stolen valor.

Name Game: Why Haven't I Seen This One?

It has been quite a while since I had one of these. The last time or two I thought I had seen every possible way my name could be perverted or messed up. Well a few months back in October Me my sibs and my blood nephew were having a Family VaCay in Virginia Beach, VA off season. One day for late lunch almost dinner we stopped at Starbucks. Now I'm not a coffee guy so I rarely get anything coffee I don't like it straight I need it either Mocha style with enough cocoa to drown out the coffee bean "burned water" flavor that I hate coffee for (just as smoking is like sucking ash) or have some caramel in the mix. So anyway they had some kind of Apple Cider/ Apple Crisp type flavor. I think it was a limited time flavor. It was pretty good. I think I'll stick to Mocha style though. The hint of apple seemed a bit off.

Anyway the purpose of this post is that a variation of my name was used, as you can see from the scan of the sticker that was on the cup. "KERT". Now at times I could have sworn that I had maybe seen this variant but usually it is the "CERT" or "CURT" or maybe even "KURT" that I have seen. OK Whatever.

Misheard Lyrics: Swing From That French Avenue Baby

It has been a while since I've made one of these Misheard Lyrics posts. I'm not sure if I have mentioned this in passing on any of the other posts. I'm not going to go back to look I'm just going to write it and post it the way things should be done. Hehehe.

This one comes from Sia off of her 1000 Forms of Fear album.

The song is Chandelier the lead single released from the album.

Now the real lyrics to the chorus are:

I'm gonna swing from the chandelier, from the chandelier
I'm gonna live like tomorrow doesn't exist
Like it doesn't exist

What I thought the lyrics were:

I'm gonna swing from the shan de liason, from the shan de liason
I'm gonna live like tomorrow doesn't exist
Like it doesn't exist

It made no sense that she wold be singing about swinging from a river. I was probably thinking about "Champs-Elysées" which is actually a famous French Avenue. UGH damn my semi knowledge of foreign things.

Also the line "one, two, three, one, two, three, drink" sounded like "one, two, three, one, two, three, three" as in dance choreography not party game instructions.

Adding To The Name Mix

Time for another installment of the order taker mishearing my name and coming up with something completely different. This time actually it isn't too bad if I were giving a last name I guess.

The misspelling this time was:

Yep cook. Guess I'm using my last name now huh?

The Cruk of The Name

So just when I think I've seen and heard them all... Yep another misspelling of my name pops up when I place an order at a food place that asks for your name for your order (early March of this year). Well this time I get to the crux of the problem of the Crock of... OK so this time my name was spelled:

C-R-U-K
Now what does that have to do with me?
Hey I'm a cancer research center in the UK.

Cool cruk your hands together, well now we have reached a real cruk of s...

For these name posts I don't mention where I went to, or scan the receipt. I don't think that really matters. Plus some of the places I go others might not like and may think there food is worse than a cruk of crap. Sometimes I even think their food is worse than that.

The Mandela Effect: Not Always A Mandela Effect

THE MANDELA EFFECT: Not Always A Mandela Effect

While not specifically looking for something on the Mandela Effect a YouTube video on the subject popped up on my recommended list, because I checkout a lot of Mandela Effect videos: This video attempts to explain the phenomenon with the psychological answers. I guess it is up to viewers to decide if does or doesn't explain things.

Many Mandela Effect videos are just about slightly different words or pronunciations of the words, or part of the word dropped off at the end, or the not as popular spelling variant of a name. Hmm was the Toys R Us giraffe mascot named Jeffrey or Geoffrey? I'm pretty sure it was the not as common Geoffrey not Jeffrey. Many people might "remember" it as Jeffrey because it is the more common spelling.

Misheard lyrics: For lyrics often improper grammar is used either to make a rhyme or to keep the timing and tempo of a song consistent. Or an entire new word will be created (see Steve Miller Band: The Joker and the line "'Cause I speak of the pompitous of love"). In transposing lyrics to the written word mistakes can be made. Also how a word is enunciated or spoken, well sung rather, can be misinterpreted. For instance do you know what Manfred Mann's Earth Band is singing in "Blinded By The Light"? It isn't the crude version that people think it is. Misheard lyrics are simply that misheard lyrics. They haven't been changed by the Mandela Effect. They are just commonly misheard and the "new" version of what they say is mistakenly passed along. There is a similar thing with misquotes from movies. I won't get into those here, but many people remember a quote in a specific way that was never actually said. In many ways it is like that kids game of Telephone. Where you sit in a circle (or organized line) and someone whispers something in the ear of the person siting next to them. That person then whispers what they "heard" to the next person, That person repeats the process and on and on til the saying gets to the last person. That person then says out loud what they heard and then the original person reveals what they started things with.

There is even a Mandela Effect for the opening title speech from the Original Star Trek series. The real line is and ALWAYS has been "Space THE Final Frontier..." The Mandela Effect has changed it to "Space A Final Frontier..." It is simply a matter of pronunciation. In the Speech William Shatner pronounces the word "T-H-E' as "Thuh" not "Thee" so it sounds like he is saying "A". There are similar misunderstandings exactly like this that people have labeled as a Mandela Effect.

The phenomenon that is called the Mandela Effect could just as easily be called the "Barenstain Bears Effect".

There is at least one ME video poster who has blocked all comments on his videos, you can't even vote thumbs up or thumbs down on them. He says he is tired of people commenting on his videos. I think maybe he was getting too many negative comments and didn't like people complaining about them or the Mandela Effect. I first noticed him from a video where he has compiled about 20 minutes worth of reports of John Lennon's death and points out some of the inconsistencies of the reporting. Many of the reports were the first "breaking news" reports that were broadcast within an hour or two of his being killed. Some details of those early reports were in error. As often happens with news reporting the first initial reports have inaccurate information. Unfortunately it is the first reports that people often remember. They will remember a celebrity being arrested for something, but not that they were found innocent a few months later, or that the charges were dropped and there was never a trial.

On some other Mandela Effect video I commented on how the first initial reports often contain inaccuracies and someone tried to correct me by mentioning some details of an event I wasn't even commenting on but apparently was mentioned in the video I was commenting on. I have also been "corrected" at times with comments that basically say the same thing I had just commented, or they think I am complaining about what I commented on. This sort of thing happens to me sometimes on Facebook also. I often think I should stop commenting on social media especially videos some of which are a couple of years old.

There are some Mandela Effect believers that say if you don't believe in the Mandela Effect and mock it. You have not been effected by it yet and are from this reality. Huh? Yes most people believe that part of the Mandela Effect is that we are currently in a moment of time where multiple realities are combining together as one reality and that is why many are experiencing the Mandela Effect. They refuse to believe that they might be wrong about one difference and they defend the entire phenomenon. They also say if you don't believe in the phenomenon you don't get it and don't understand it. The one thing to understand is people are finding proof of different spellings of things or of slogans or logos that are different than what they had remembered.

Name Game: We Need A Real Earthy Sounding Name This Time

Well I thought I had seen, heard, and otherwise all the different ways to mess up my name. Never say Never and Never think you have heard the last butchering of your name. The usual suspect a cashier at a food place where they ask for your name to identify your order. This time early in November I must have listpth or sthumthing because the name sounded like Mork & Mindy's Offspring Mearth as played by Jonathan Winters.

The name this time was Kurth for what it was worth. Hmm sounds like a Klingon actually.

Captian K'rth

Gotta Call Herc! Gotta Call Herc!

In the dining receipt name game I recently got another good one, or at least a new one. If you actually read this post's title then you have the name, but not the spelling I got.

Newton and Toot from "The Mighty Hercules" cartoon (1963-66)

OH let me count the ways my name Kirk has been misheard and spelled, of course there is Curt/Kurt, Kurk, Kirt, then there is Kart, Cark, Cork, Turk, Curck (a fave from a few months back). I've even been called by my brother's name Erik once or twice from people with faulty memories or switched brain wires or just in the know of cool Scandinavian names. Erik (haven't heard Rick) does sound kind of like Kirk and oddly I do have a brother Erik. It is weird when someone who doesn't know him or even know I have a brother calls me Erik. They probably think the other spelling Eric.

I've occasionally been called Keith, Karl, Ken, Kent, or Clark (Klark). Haven't seen those in print though. A classic from years ago from a mailing list by a bank "Kirl"? WT? All I can think is they cut and pasted my name/address from another list dropped the second "k" and moved over my middle initial "L".

Getting these alternate names printed on a receipt or as the address on an envelope is another thing. Sometimes I think about keeping the things, but I think I have already recycled or tossed most of them anyway so the collection would not be complete. It has only been the most recent ones that I have even bothered making a blog post about. I'm not even sure why I've done that.

This new one was the first time I recall getting this misspelling. I think I had heard it before, there are very few that I have not "heard". It is another instant Classic...HERK! My Gawd I"m Hercules! Wow I think I'm honored to get Hercules' nickname. Hehe.

Get Me To The Kirk On Time!

Get Me To The Kirk On Time!

Those who are worldly wise of course know that Kirk is Scottish for "Church" and that Kirk is also has some old Norse and Germanic roots. As regular readers know often times I have gotten some strange misspellings on my order receipt from those restaurants that ask for your name rather than bother assigning your order the number that the cash register automatically assigns to it. I guess they do it to be more personal and friendly. It is also a test of the intelligence and spelling skills of the order takers. How well they listen and hear what you said. I am often tempted to give my name as "Captain Kirk" and see how often they screw that up, but my normal name of Kirk is butchered enough by some of these kids who can't give the proper change if the cash register goes on the blink. They will also stare at you if you give them an amount that will give you full dollar bills or silver change instead of a few odd pennies.

So the entry for this post was more divine intervention I think than just some punk order taker not knowing how to spell the simple name of "Kirk". This guy came up with "C-U-R-C-K". Hey he got it Foneticallee excuse me phonetically Correct sort of. "Curck" if I spelled my name that way most people would think my name was Church, which in some ways it sort of is.

If I had my way I would rather be mistaken for someone like OH the current Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Meme Game: Er Name Game

OK you know the drill. Yep in a semi-recent trip to a food place that uses your name to identify your order the cashier misheard my name and spelled it wrong for the order/receipt. Another new one for me, this is one of the better ones. CARK

Apparently guys named Marc with a "C" also get called "CARK".

When it comes to cooking I'm beside myself:

This reminds me of the 1960s song "The Name Game" by Shirley Ellis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LulWZQo46Ao I found a cover version of it from the TV show American Horror Story with Jessica Lange https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFf4TYGpFj0

So another misspelling similar but not quite. Sorry Quark not this time, maybe the next one.

Name Game Misspelling

ACK! Another round of my name being butchered misspelled at a food place by the cashier. The same place as some of these other wonderful weird misspellings of my name. This time there really should have been no problem. When I said my name, I saw the cashier was a little confused, so I said my name again and spelled it out K-I-R-K I thought the guy/kid/whatever was getting it, but NO. This is the name that the receipt had: Kart. Again I thought I had seen an heard all the variants that my name can give. Guess Not.

Whats In a Name?

A few months back I was at one of those food places where when you place your order they ask for your name, instead of giving you an order number. I guess to make things seem more personal. Anyway once again the cashier misspelled my name. This time it was "CURK". I think I have seen it before not 100% sure though. I thought I would add it to these misspelling rant posts I do every once in a while. This time it didn't drive me batty. Sometimes they do. I guess I'm mellowing with age since a big birthday is coming up soon.

Update: Got another "xURK" this time it was "KURK" closer but no cigar.

I Stand Corrected: Turk IS a Name

I have mentioned on this blog some of my adventures of people misspelling my name. I mentioned that I have on occasion had people call me "Turk" and I always thought it was a Non-Name. Well it turns out it is a real name (0r nickname at the very least). It is the name of a baseball player in the 1960s, at least one player. Seems there was a ball player named: Turk Farrell (Real name Richard Joseph Farrell) among a few other "Turks": Turk Lown (Omar Joseph Lown), Turk Wendell (Steven John Wendell). Hmm maybe it is just a nickname. However, it is also a last name for a few players too many to mention here. I stand corrected.

I discovered this fact when I got the Turk Farrell baseball card to help complete my 1965 Topps Baseball Card collection. I am trying to complete the set before the 50th Anniversary of the set and specifically before my birthday in April.

So although Turk really is a name it is NOT MY NAME. Neither is "irk" or "erk" or "urk"

The Ting Tings "That's Not My Name".

Another Name Misspelling: ACK!

The other day I was at a food place that uses your name to track your order while you are waiting for it. Well on the receipt they misspelled my name. It wasn't as bad as the mailing list that butchers my name as "KIRL" (which I blogged about in my Mailinglist Name Misspelling Rant) but it was a mistake just the same. I think part of it was the cashier/order taker was an English as a second Language person. I now forget what nationality the person was. Any way this time they misspelled my name as "CORK". What?

OK I might understand being mistaken for this Guy:

Or maybe this weird looking guy:

But this?
Oh well things could be worse.

Fryday Fourtoon

Take a good look at that fortune from a real fortune cookie I had about a week ago. The fortune for the cookie shown still wrapped was something else ("A wise man knows everything, a shrewd one everybody"). In case your monitor is too small or you are looking at this on your iPhone the fortune reads:

"You will be showered with good luch."

Talk about your misfortunes or your misspelling. Um I think they meant to say "luck" or maybe forgot the "n" for "Lunch"? That cookie did follow a good portion of Hunan Chicken. So it was either good luck or good lunch, well dinner actually.

Mailinglist Name Misspelling Rant

Or What's In A Name?

OK I can live with the common misspelling of my last name using an "o" instead of an "e". It used to really tick me off, but I've learned to accept it, as I'm sure people with the last name of Smith who spell their last name Smyth. The Scandinavian spelling I use seems to baffle most people, even though Hans Christian Andersen is probably known more world-wide than Pamela Anderson (except to fans of Baywatch and Playboy magazine subscribers). Still most people spell the name Andersen with an "sOn". It's only natural since the surname in most languages and cultures means "the son of Ander (or Anders)".

I can even put up with some of the weird misspellings of my first name but the one that gets my goat, or grinds my gears is "Kirl". ACK! that's right some idiot data entry clerk at some credit card company, probably Citibank about 2 or 3 years ago, maybe even earlier somehow deleted my second "k" and combined my middle initial to my first name. Now there is a mailing list with that name on it. Wait, What? KIRL isn't even a name, it's not even the proper spelling of Curl. It's what you do to your hair, or with a set of weights, or even a very bad misspelling of a young person of the female gender.

I don't know how many times I've received junk mail under that "name". I used to tear them up and recycle them, but now if I want to take the trouble I mark those letters "Return To Sender" mark up the name a little and put a note that says something like "No such person", or "Nobody by that name at this address" and I usually put "Please remove from mailing list". Of course all this returned mail won't even be looked at, and half of it won't even be delivered by the post office. So why should I bother?

OK this made me feel a little better.

Maybe I should try to get a second identity under that name and get a second Social Security number. NO I would probably be arrested for identity theft, or trying to use an alias. Then how the frack do all those criminals steal names so easily, yet the victims spend many years trying to get things fixed and it never gets corrected?

Other misspellings of my name I can recall have been:

Akirk -I think this was another CitiBank special, using the first letter of my last name added to the front of my first name.
Curt - Often people ask me if I spell my name that way, Um NO I'm a Kirk not a Kurt. It is interesting how I haven't heard of a spelling of "Cirk".
Kick - Another Non-Name.
Kurt - Again I've been asked if this it the spelling for my name.

Rick -I know sometimes I've been called that by people who have misheard my name. I don't think I've received any mail under that name. Oddly enough I have sometimes also been called "Erik". I have a brother Erik, but often the people asking have no idea I have a brother with that name.
Turk - This I've just heard from people who have misheard my name. Again another NON-Name. I have never received any mail under it Thank Goodness

Not sure If I've gotten a "Kirt", or even a "Krik", but once several years ago from the magazine Scientific American (or maybe just Science Magazine) the label was addressed "Dr. Kirk Andersen". Somewhere I think I still have that subscription form. I liked that I was tempted to subscribe to the dang thing just because of the title on the label. It wouldn't have been worth it though as the subscription rates for that magazine was pretty expensive. With doctors as subscribers I guess they do gouge their subscribers a bit.

Good thing I don't have a complicated Middle Eastern name, that would get butchered by most English speaking people, both in pronunciation and in spelling. OK Rant over for now.
